Georgia sets its own rules for taxing retirement income.

The state has one flat income tax rate, a large exclusion for retirement income from age 62 and no tax on Social Security benefits.

Those rules can affect which accounts you draw from, and when.

How Georgia Taxes Retirement Income

For 2026, Georgia taxes income at a flat rate of 4.99%. Social Security benefits are not taxed by Georgia. Two other rules can lower the state tax on retirement income:

  • From age 62 through 64, you can exclude up to $35,000 a year of qualifying retirement income. From 65, the limit is $65,000 a year. Each spouse who qualifies has a separate limit.
  • Qualifying income includes pensions, annuities, interest, dividends, capital gains and net rental income, plus a limited amount of earned income.

Because part of your income may be excluded and part taxed, the order of withdrawals can change your Georgia tax bill over many years. See retirement planning for how we set that order.

Homestead Exemptions on Your Home

Georgia offers a homestead exemption on your main home. Counties and school districts can add their own exemptions, and some of those depend on age or income. You apply through your county.

The exemption lowers the tax bill. Whether the house still fits your plan is a separate question, and often the bigger one.

No Estate or Inheritance Tax

Georgia has no estate tax and no inheritance tax. Large estates can still owe federal estate tax.

Inherited traditional IRAs can also create income tax questions for your heirs. Our estate and wealth transfer planning work covers that.

How We Work Across Georgia

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Holland Capital is based in Charlotte. Video and phone calls handle most of the work for Georgia clients. In-person meetings are by appointment at the meeting center named on your city page.

The written plan comes first. Our investment management follows it, and tax-efficient investing guides choices such as which account to draw from.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Pensions and IRA Withdrawals Taxed in Georgia?

They can be. From 62 through 64, Georgia lets you exclude up to $35,000 a year of qualifying retirement income, and up to $65,000 a year from 65. Qualifying retirement income above your available exclusion generally remains part of your Georgia taxable income. Social Security is not taxed.

Why Choose a Fiduciary Financial Advisor for a Georgia Retirement?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. For a Georgia retiree, that means timing withdrawals around the retirement income exclusion and the flat tax, with your interests first.

Some advice can increase what we earn, such as moving a 401(k) into an account we manage. We tell you before you decide.

Do You Serve Georgia Clients from Charlotte?

Yes. Most planning meetings happen by video or phone. Each city page names where we meet in person, by appointment.
