Years into a career. Time to see what the account is doing.

Athens is home to the University of Georgia. Close to half of adults 25 and older have a four-year degree or more, and roughly a quarter of workers are employed by government.

If you chose the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), you have a defined contribution account rather than a TRS pension. What you have later rests on how much is contributed and how the money is invested. Mid-career is a good time to check both.

Look for help from a fiduciary, and ask how that person is paid.

Are You on Track?

We start with the retirement you want and the age you hope to reach it. Then we compare that with your ORP balance, your contributions and your other savings.

The result shows whether you are on pace, ahead or behind, and by how much.

How the ORP Is Invested

Your ORP account is invested in the options you chose. We review how it is spread across stocks, bonds and cash, and whether that mix still fits your timeline.

Adding Other Savings

The University System of Georgia also offers 403(b) and 457(b) plans to eligible employees. If you have room to save more, we look at whether those plans make sense for you. For more on the state plans, see our Georgia state employee retirement planning guide.

One Plan Across Every Account

Your ORP, any supplemental plans and your savings outside work should be planned together. Our investment management handles any outside accounts you ask us to manage, invested to complement your university accounts.

How We Work with Clients in Athens

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Bring your latest ORP statement, any 403(b) or 457(b) statements, a current pay stub and any outside account statements.

You get a written plan that shows where you stand and what to change, if anything.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Our offices are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida. We work with clients in Athens primarily by video or phone. When an in-person meeting makes sense, we meet by appointment at the Regus center at 2470 Daniells Bridge Road.

For clients whose investments we manage, accounts are held directly at Charles Schwab in the client’s own name. Holland Capital manages the investments but does not take custody of client assets. If a client ever needs in-person assistance from Schwab, the closest branch is in Peachtree Corners at 5150 Peachtree Parkway.

We work with clients throughout Georgia. You can see the other Georgia communities we serve here.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Should I Have in My ORP by Mid-Career?

Targets differ from person to person. Your salary, planned retirement age and other savings all shape it. We build yours with real numbers.

Why Use a Fiduciary Financial Advisor for a University Retirement Plan?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. For a faculty member, that means advice on the ORP, any supplemental plans and outside savings together, with your interests first.

Accounts you move to our management increase our fee. We make that clear before you choose.

Is There an Office in Athens?

Yes. We meet by appointment at the Regus center at 2470 Daniells Bridge Road. Check-ins between semesters work well by video.
