Case Study
Here’s a typical example of our work with executives. (This is a theoretical client story only to avoid privacy issues.*)
Mark and Elizabeth are 51 and 45 years old, respectively. Mark is a CFO at a fast-growing firm, and Elizabeth is a Director of Human Resources at a healthcare company. They have two teenage daughters.
They initially came to Holland Capital Management for help determining how best to handle Mark’s stock options. However, the couple faced a complex financial landscape of high incomes and high taxes. With busy lives, two kids and a lot of expenses, it seemed their money flowed out as fast as it came in. So, along with creating a plan for the equity compensation, they also wanted to be sure they were on track for a secure future retirement.
To start, we sat down and learned about their short-term and long-term goals. What did they want their future to look like? What would retirement mean for them?
During the planning process, our CFA® Charterholder and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional dove deep into their needs to find the best strategies. This analysis included:
- Preparing a comprehensive financial plan that included close attention to managing risks.
- Development of a plan to accelerate their retirement savings. This also included some Roth conversions to help increase their tax-free income sources for the future.
- Analysis to find the best strategies for turning Mark’s stock options into sustainable wealth while minimizing taxes.
- Working with their CPA to find strategies to lower their tax bills now and in the future.
- Collaborating with their estate planning attorney to create a plan to transition their wealth to their kids and favorite nonprofits tax-efficiently.
- Setting up a 529 college funding plan would help with that expense but give them flexibility if their children's plans change.
They also had an opportunity to buy a vacation rental home in their favorite mountain resort. They wanted to finance it but were concerned about the time required to deal with a mortgage company. We worked with our portfolio lending partner to help them get hassle-free financing based on their existing assets.
Over time, we’ve helped Mark and Elizabeth diversify their assets away from their employer stock and industries so they will be less impacted by a recession or industry downturn. Best of all, they are now just a few years away from financial independence, where they both would have the option to stop working or pursue other interests if they chose.
