Retired pay arrives each month. A civilian job covers the rest. When can it stop?

Woodbridge has about 44,700 residents, and about 9.5% are 65 or older. Woodbridge’s median household income is about $105,000, and the median home value is near $422,000. Quantico and Fort Belvoir are both close by.

A civilian paycheck that began as extra money can become part of the household budget. A fixed-fee written plan shows which year the household can live on retired pay, savings and Social Security. You pay for that answer, and your accounts can stay where they are. Ask anyone advising you if they are bound as a fiduciary and what they are paid.

What Retired Pay Covers Today

We compare your retired pay after deductions with your current spending. The gap is what savings must cover once work stops. Our guide to military retirement financial planning covers more.

Virginia Tax on Military Retired Pay

Starting in 2025, Virginia lets you subtract eligible military benefits that are in your federal income, up to $40,000, and there is no age requirement. Eligible military benefits above the subtraction can remain taxable by Virginia, and civilian wages generally remain taxable. Social Security is subtracted. We build state tax into each year.

Accounts from Two Careers

You may have a TSP from military service and a civilian workplace plan. We compare which accounts should provide income first and whether combining any of them makes sense. Our guide to TSP rollover options explains one choice to consider.

Investing After the Last Paycheck

Our investment management is one later option, with your plan turned into a written investment policy statement first.

How We Work with Clients in Woodbridge

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Bring your retiree account statement, your TSP and civilian retirement plan statements, a Social Security estimate and a recent civilian pay stub.

Your written plan names the year the second paycheck can stop. Its fee is fixed and agreed before any work starts. It is yours to use alone, with an advisor you already have, or with us carrying out each step.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Our offices are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida. We work with clients in Woodbridge primarily by video or phone. When an in-person meeting makes sense, we meet by appointment at the Regus center at Quantico Corporate Center, 800 Corporate Drive, in Stafford.

We work with clients throughout Virginia. You can see the other Virginia communities we serve here.

Our what we do page explains how a planning engagement works.
