As a fiduciary financial advisor in Waxhaw, Holland Capital helps households who moved here from another state bring old accounts, estate documents and tax planning into one North Carolina plan. We work with clients in Waxhaw by video and phone, and meet in person by appointment at our office in Ballantyne, a short drive away.
You moved here. Your paperwork may not have.
Many Waxhaw households arrived in the last fifteen years, often from another state. The house, the schools and the commute came first. The financial side often came along as it was.
You may still have a 401(k) at a former employer, a will signed in another state and a 529 account opened before the move. Your beneficiary forms may not have been reviewed since then.
Most of it may still work. It was just set up for a different place and an earlier stage of life.
Bringing the Old State’s Paperwork Up to Date
We start with a list of what you own, where it is held and who would receive it. Then we look at what the move changed.
A will signed in another state is usually still valid here. But it may name executors or guardians who no longer make sense. It may also use terms that fit the old state’s rules. Powers of attorney and health care documents deserve the same review.
We work with your estate attorney on this. Our estate and wealth transfer planning page explains how.
Accounts left at a former employer need a decision too. You may leave them where they are, move them to a new employer’s plan or roll them into an IRA. Our 401(k) rollover guide explains those choices.
How North Carolina Taxes Your Money
North Carolina has one flat income tax rate. Your paycheck, your capital gains and, later, your IRA and 401(k) withdrawals pay the same rate. Social Security benefits are exempt from state tax.
That can differ from the state you left. It can affect how much you save in Roth accounts versus pre-tax accounts and which accounts you draw from later.
North Carolina also does not give a state tax deduction for 529 contributions, so an existing 529 from another state can usually stay where it is.

Your Accounts as One Portfolio
After a move, you may have accounts at several firms, each invested on its own. Together, they may own many of the same investments or take more risk than you intended.
We manage the accounts under one written investment policy statement. It states what the money is for, how much risk the plan can carry and which account holds what. Moving everything to one place is not required.
At Holland Capital, investment management can begin with sorting out where each account belongs and how it should be invested.
Our retirement planning page shows how those investment decisions fit into the larger plan.
How We Work with Clients in Waxhaw
Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.
Bring a statement from every account to the first meeting, including any left in your old state, and copies of your will and powers of attorney if you have them.
We will tell you what the move changed, what still works and what we would update first.
The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Does a Fiduciary Financial Advisor Check After an Out-of-State Move?
Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. That includes advice on accounts we do not manage.
An old employer plan could stay where it is, move to your new employer’s plan or move to an IRA we manage. Only the last choice adds to what we are paid, and we tell you that up front.
Is My Will from Another State Still Good in North Carolina?
A will that was valid where you signed it is usually still valid here. The more useful question is whether it still says what you want.
The people you named, your choice of guardians or trustees and the size of your estate may have changed since you signed it. We review the plan with you, and a North Carolina estate attorney can update the documents.
Can We Meet at Your Office?
Yes. Our office is in Ballantyne at 15720 Brixham Hill Avenue, a short drive from Waxhaw, and we meet there by appointment.
For shorter check-ins, we can meet by video or phone.
