Two demanding careers. Young children at home. One set of paychecks asked to cover college and retirement.

Vienna is a town of about 16,700 people, with a median household income of about $217,000. Median home value is just over $1 million. Tysons employers sit next door.

College is years away, and retirement is further still. No single split suits every family. Your written plan, priced as a fixed fee, sets a monthly figure for each goal and shows what that choice means for both. Before you take advice on it, ask whether the advisor is a fiduciary and how they are paid.

How Virginia529 Fits In

Virginia529 is the state’s college savings program. Virginia allows the account owner to deduct up to $4,000 per Virginia529 account each year, with eligible excess contributions carried forward. An account owner age 70 or older may deduct the full eligible contribution for that year.

The Same Budget Funds Retirement

Your workplace plans are the other claim on this money. We check what each of you contributes, any employer match and what your retirement planning target needs. Our 401(k) contribution guide goes deeper.

Then we test a few college contribution levels and show how each one moves your retirement date.

When the Children’s Plans Change

A child may choose a less costly school, earn aid or take another route. The plan sets the share of costs you want to cover, and we revisit it as the children grow.

You can open and fund the accounts on your own. If you later want the family’s savings managed to a written policy statement, investment management with us is there as a later option.

How We Work with Clients in Vienna

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Come with pay stubs for both of you, your workplace plan statements, any accounts already open for the children and last year’s tax return.

The result is a written plan with one monthly amount for college and one for retirement, at a fixed fee settled up front. Use it on your own, alongside a current advisor or together with us.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Our offices are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida. We work with clients in Vienna primarily by video or phone. When an in-person meeting makes sense, we meet by appointment at the Regus center at 8000 Towers Crescent Drive, 13th Floor, in Tysons.

For clients whose investments we manage, accounts are held directly at Charles Schwab in the client’s own name. Holland Capital manages the investments but does not take custody of client assets. If a client ever needs in-person assistance from Schwab, the closest branch is in Tysons at 1650 Tysons Boulevard.

We work with clients throughout Virginia. You can see the other Virginia communities we serve here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Should We Put into Virginia529 Each Year?

That depends on your income, your retirement target, how many children you have and how much of their costs you hope to pay. Your goal can be part of the cost rather than all of it.

Where Does a Fiduciary Financial Advisor Fit in College Saving?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. For parents, the split we suggest between college and retirement comes from your goals, not from any product.

You agree to the plan’s fixed fee before any work starts. Asking us to manage investments later would mean a separate fee, which we explain up front.

Can Vienna Parents Meet with Us in Person?

Yes, by appointment at the Regus center at 8000 Towers Crescent Drive, 13th Floor, Vienna, in Tysons.

Most work runs by video, around school runs.
