Several former employers. Retirement accounts left behind. More plans than you want to track.

Suffolk has about 105,000 residents, and the median household income is about $93,000. Lockheed Martin’s Center for Innovation is in the city.

A contracting career can pass through several companies, and each one may leave a workplace plan behind. Combining everything is one option, not the only one. A fixed-fee written plan recommends what to do with each account, and you can carry it out without moving anything to us. Find out whether any advisor you speak with is a fiduciary and where their pay comes from.

A Full Inventory of Former Plans

We gather every account, including any rollover IRA and your current plan. For each one we record the balance, investments, costs and the choices available to former employees. Together, the mix may be more cautious or bolder than you expect.

Keep, Combine or Roll Over

Leaving money in a former plan can keep investment options you like. Moving it into your current plan or an IRA can make it simpler to manage. Our 401(k) rollover guide for job changes walks through the choices.

Your current plan gets the same review, and our page on how to maximize your 401(k) covers the basics.

Five retirement decisions and why timing matters.

A Standing Rule for the Next Move

If you change companies again, the plan already says what to do with the account you leave. The decision is made ahead of time, not while you are starting a new job.

Managing the Combined Portfolio, If You Choose

Once the plan is done, our investment management is available as a separate decision, following a written investment policy statement.

How We Work with Clients in Suffolk

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Bring the latest statement from each old employer plan and IRA, your current plan’s statement and fund list, and a recent pay stub.

We hand you a written plan with an answer for each account, at a fixed fee agreed up front. Make the changes yourself, give the plan to your current advisor, or have us handle them.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Our offices are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida. We work with clients in Suffolk primarily by video or phone. When an in-person meeting makes sense, we meet by appointment at the Regus center at Crossways Commerce I, 1545 Crossways Boulevard, Suite 250, in Chesapeake.

We work with clients throughout Virginia. You can see the other Virginia communities we serve here.

Our what we do page explains how a planning engagement works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should Old 401(k) Accounts Be Rolled Together?

Not in every case. Combining can make accounts easier to watch and rebalance. Staying put can make sense when a former plan has investments or features worth keeping.

How Does a Fiduciary Financial Advisor Approach Old Contractor Plans?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. For old contractor plans, that means we may tell you to leave an account where it is when it serves you better there.

The plan carries one fixed fee agreed first; hiring us later to manage money is billed separately, and we say so before you commit.

Is There a Meeting Place Close to Suffolk?

We meet by appointment at Crossways Commerce I, 1545 Crossways Boulevard, Suite 250, in neighboring Chesapeake. The rest of the work is handled by video or phone.
