A federal career. A retirement date to choose.

Salisbury has about 31,000 people. The Salisbury VA Health Care System is the largest employer in Rowan County.

If you work for the VA under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), your retirement has three parts: a pension, your Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) and Social Security. Each one depends on your age, your years of service and the date you choose.

When Can You Retire?

Under FERS, your first eligible date depends on your minimum retirement age, which is set by your birth year, and your years of service. Retiring a few months later can change the size of your pension.

Some employees who retire before 62 on an immediate FERS pension may receive the FERS supplement. Work earnings can reduce that supplement. Our guide on FERS retirement planning covers the rules.

Your Pension and Your Spouse

At retirement, you choose whether to provide a survivor benefit for your spouse. It reduces your pension, and it is hard to change later. A married employee generally needs the spouse’s consent to choose less than a full survivor benefit.

The plan compares that choice with other ways to protect your spouse.

The TSP and Health Coverage

Your TSP can stay in the plan, pay you monthly or move to an IRA. We work out how much to take each year and in what order.

Keeping Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) in retirement requires meeting federal enrollment and retirement rules. Check your coverage history before you set a retirement date.

Our investment management service looks after your TSP and personal savings as a whole.

How We Work with Clients in Salisbury

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Bring your latest annuity estimate from HR, your TSP statement, your Social Security statement, your leave and earnings statement and a recent tax return.

You receive a written plan: retirement dates to consider, the survivor benefit choice, how to use the TSP and the right age for Social Security.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Unused Sick Leave Count Toward My FERS Pension?

Under FERS, unused sick leave generally adds to your service time for the pension calculation. It does not count toward the years you need to become eligible.

Why Does a Fiduciary Standard Matter for a Federal Retirement?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. For someone at the VA, the advice covers the pension, the TSP and Social Security together.

The fee is agreed in writing at the start.
