You give every year. The plan should say how.

Census figures for 2020 to 2024 show about 94,000 residents in Mount Pleasant. More than a quarter of its households earn $200,000 or more, and about six in ten residents were born in another state.

If giving matters to you, the questions add up. Which assets should you give, and when? How do this year’s gifts fit with what you leave to your children and to the causes you care about?

Before acting on any of it, work with someone who is required to put your interest first.

Giving Investments Instead of Cash

If you have held a stock or fund for more than a year and it has grown, giving the shares directly to a qualified charity may avoid realizing the capital gain yourself. If you itemize, you may also qualify for a deduction based on fair market value, subject to IRS rules.

We check which holdings are best to give and which to keep. Our article on a charitable remainder trust for appreciated stock covers another way to give.

Using a Donor-Advised Fund

A donor-advised fund lets you make an irrevocable gift now and recommend grants to charities over time. You may qualify for a deduction in the year you contribute.

One use is grouping several years of giving into a single year. Whether that helps depends on your deductions, your income and the tax rules in effect that year. Giving directly is sometimes simpler and just as good.

Gifts Now and Gifts Later

What you give during your life and what you leave at death work together. Naming a qualified charity as beneficiary of a traditional IRA can make sense, because the charity generally does not owe income tax on the distributions. Individual beneficiaries may owe tax on taxable distributions.

South Carolina does not have an estate tax. A federal estate tax can still apply to very large estates, so we check where yours stands.

We do not draft wills or trusts. We work with your estate attorney and tax professional so the documents match the plan. Our page on estate and wealth transfer planning explains our part.

Investments That Serve Both Goals

With investment management, we keep the income you need coming in, track which holdings carry gains and set aside the shares best suited for giving.

How We Work with Clients in Mount Pleasant

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Bring a recent statement for each account showing cost basis, last year’s tax return, a list of the charities you support with roughly what you give each year, and your current will or trust.

The result is a written giving plan: what to give, from which account, in which year, and how it fits your retirement income and estate plan.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Our offices are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida. We work with clients in Mount Pleasant primarily by video or phone. When an in-person meeting makes sense, we meet by appointment at the Regus center at 1240 Winnowing Way in Mount Pleasant.

For clients whose investments we manage, accounts are held directly at Charles Schwab in the client’s own name. Holland Capital manages the investments but does not take custody of client assets. If a client ever needs in-person assistance from Schwab, the closest branch is in Mount Pleasant at 962 Houston Northcutt Boulevard.

We work with clients throughout South Carolina. You can see the other South Carolina communities we serve here.

Our what we do page explains how a planning engagement works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Donor-Advised Fund Right for Us?

It depends. A donor-advised fund can help when you want to give a larger amount in one year or give appreciated investments. If your gifts are modest, giving directly may work just as well. The tax treatment differs for people who itemize and people who do not, so we check what applies to you.

We compare both before you decide.

Why Work with a Fiduciary Financial Advisor on Charitable Giving?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. When you give, it means choosing each gift for your taxes, your income and your heirs.

Money you give away leaves our management. We still recommend the gift when it fits your plan, and we put our fee on paper before any work starts.

Is There a Place to Meet in Mount Pleasant?

Yes. We sit down by appointment at the Regus center on Winnowing Way.

Between meetings, a call or a video meeting works.
