Payroll buys company shares. The paycheck comes from the same company.

About 44,300 people live in Manassas, and the median household income is about $114,000. Micron, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, Aurora Flight Sciences and UVA Health Prince William are among the employers in and around the city.

An employee stock purchase plan, or ESPP, lets you buy company shares through payroll. Over time, ESPP shares and your salary can both depend on one company. If your 401(k) also holds employer stock, that adds another layer. A fixed-fee written plan sets a clear rule for what to keep and what to sell. You pay for the advice and can follow it in the accounts you already have. Whoever advises you on company stock, learn whether they are a fiduciary and what they earn.

Counting Everything Tied to Your Employer

We add up every place your employer shows up: ESPP shares, company stock in the 401(k) and your job itself. We read your plan documents rather than assume terms.

Setting a Keep or Sell Rule

We write a guideline for how much employer stock to hold. Each new ESPP purchase is then kept or sold by that guideline.

Selling can create a tax bill. The tax-efficient investing guide shows why the order of sales matters.

Reviewing the 401(k)

If your 401(k) holds employer stock, our guide to net unrealized appreciation explains one issue to review before any rollover.

Where the Proceeds Go

Invest sale proceeds yourself, or, as a later and separate step, our investment management can manage that money under a written investment policy statement that reflects your plan.

How We Work with Clients in Manassas

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Bring copies of your ESPP account statement, your latest 401(k) statement, a recent pay stub and any ESPP plan documents.

Your written plan sets a limit on employer stock and a rule for each new purchase, for a fixed fee agreed before we begin. Act on it yourself, with an advisor you trust, or have us put it in place.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Our offices are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida. We work with clients in Manassas primarily by video or phone. When an in-person meeting makes sense, we meet by appointment at the Regus center at Battlefield Overlook, 10432 Balls Ford Road, Suite 300.

We work with clients throughout Virginia. You can see the other Virginia communities we serve here.

Our what we do page explains how a planning engagement works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Company Stock Should I Keep?

That depends on your other savings, your goals and how much income already comes from that employer. We set a limit that fits your plan and explain why.

Does a Fiduciary Financial Advisor Matter for Company Stock Decisions?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. With ESPP shares, our advice on what to keep or sell stays the same whether the proceeds remain with you or come to us.

Your plan has a fixed price agreed at the start. If you later hire us to manage investments, that has its own fee, named before you decide.

Where Can Manassas Clients Meet in Person?

In-person meetings are by appointment, held at the Regus center in Battlefield Overlook, 10432 Balls Ford Road, Suite 300, Manassas. Much of the planning gets done over phone and video calls.
