One spouse earns a pension. The other builds a 401(k). Two rulebooks. One household.

Leesburg’s population is about 49,900. Households have a median income of about $145,000. Loudoun’s public schools, county government and Inova Loudoun are among the employers here.

The VRS benefit and the private-sector 401(k) work differently. One may provide pension income, while the other is an account balance you decide how to use. Each spouse may also want a different date to stop. A fixed-fee written plan treats both as one household budget and tests different dates. You pay for the judgment, and you decide who acts on it. Ask any advisor whether they are a fiduciary and how they are compensated.

Starting with the VRS Spouse

Not every Loudoun public employee is in the same VRS plan. Your VRS coverage may be Plan 1, Plan 2 or the Hybrid Retirement Plan. The Hybrid Plan combines a defined benefit pension with a defined contribution account. Our guide to VRS planning explains the plans and payout choices.

Bringing In the 401(k) Spouse

For the 401(k) spouse, we check whether the saving rate fits the household plan. Our guide on how to get more from a 401(k) lists the main choices.

Testing Who Stops When

We do not assume either spouse should stop first. We run both together, the VRS spouse first and the 401(k) spouse first, year by year.

For Virginia tax, pension and 401(k) income generally counts to the extent it is in federal adjusted gross income, unless a Virginia subtraction covers it. Social Security is not taxed by the state. Our guide to retirement income planning for couples shows how two dates can share one budget.

Investing as One Household

Our investment management is an optional next step, with both spouses’ accounts under one written investment policy statement for the household.

How We Work with Clients in Leesburg

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Bring along the VRS member statement, the latest 401(k) statement, both Social Security estimates and a pay stub from each job.

We deliver one written plan for the two of you, at a fixed fee agreed before the work starts. Follow it on your own, pass it to a current advisor, or let us put it into action.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Our offices are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida. We work with clients in Leesburg primarily by video or phone. When an in-person meeting makes sense, we meet by appointment at the Regus center at 50 Catoctin Circle NE, Suite 101.

For clients whose investments we manage, accounts are held directly at Charles Schwab in the client’s own name. Holland Capital manages the investments but does not take custody of client assets. If a client ever needs in-person assistance from Schwab, the closest branch is in Leesburg at 1603 Village Market SE, Suite 100.

We work with clients throughout Virginia. You can see the other Virginia communities we serve here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which of Us Should Retire First?

That depends on the pension formula, the 401(k) balance, each person’s job and what you both want. We compare several orders side by side.

Why Choose a Fiduciary Financial Advisor When Spouses Have Different Plans?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. In a two-benefit household, our advice on either benefit does not depend on whether any account ever moves to us.

One fixed fee, agreed up front, covers the plan. Later investment management by us has a separate fee, laid out before you choose.

Can We Meet with You in Leesburg?

Yes. Set an appointment and we will meet you at the Regus center, 50 Catoctin Circle NE, Suite 101, Leesburg. Day-to-day planning carries on over video and phone between meetings.
