A pension whose value may change with more service. A savings plan that grows with markets. A question about when to leave.

The U.S. Department of Energy and its Oak Ridge contractors employ about 17,000 people in the Knoxville area. About 15% of Knoxville workers have government jobs, and about 26% of households receive Social Security.

Some Oak Ridge employees have a pension benefit as well as a retirement savings plan. For employees who are pension-eligible, another year of service can change the benefit under the plan formula. Whether that change is worth staying for is the planning question. Before you decide, find out if the person advising you is held to a fiduciary standard and what they earn.

Read Your Own Pension Formula

Pension rules differ by employer and by hire date, and not every employee is eligible. We start from your plan documents and benefit estimates. We note which factors actually drive your benefit under your plan, including service, pay and any early retirement reduction that applies.

What One More Year Adds

We estimate your pension at the date you could leave and at one, two and three years later. We compare the added income with what those extra years mean for your savings, your Social Security and your time. Our guide to early retirement covers the wider trade-offs.

The Savings Side of the Decision

Your savings plan may need to cover the years between leaving and starting Social Security. We test whether it can, and at what withdrawal rate, for each possible leaving date.

Investing for Your Chosen Date

Once you pick a date, our investment management sets up your savings for the withdrawals ahead, with the pension included in the plan.

How We Work with Clients in Knoxville

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Bring your pension estimates, your savings plan statement, a Social Security estimate and any early retirement details from your employer.

We deliver a written plan that compares each leaving date side by side, with the income from each source.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Our offices are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida. We work with clients in Knoxville primarily by video or phone. When an in-person meeting makes sense, we meet by appointment at the Regus center in First Horizon Plaza, 800 South Gay Street, Suite 700.

For clients whose investments we manage, accounts are held directly at Charles Schwab in the client’s own name. Holland Capital manages the investments but does not take custody of client assets. If a client ever needs in-person assistance from Schwab, the closest branch is in Knoxville at 10114 Parkside Drive.

We work with clients throughout Tennessee. You can see the other Tennessee communities we serve here.

What Makes a Fiduciary Financial Advisor Different for This Decision?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. For you, that means the leaving date we recommend is the one that fits your plan, even if it is later than you hoped.
