Your portfolio is large. You want to know how it fits the rest of your life.
Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 count about 37,900 people on Hilton Head Island. Roughly two in five are at least 65.
If most of your savings sit in a taxable brokerage account, each sale can create a tax bill. The account also has to support your income, your spending plans and what you leave to your family.
You may want an independent advisor who acts as a fiduciary, explains every fee in writing and looks at the whole picture before recommending any change.
What a Taxable Account Asks of You
In a taxable account, dividends and interest can create taxable income each year. Selling an investment for more than its cost basis can also create a taxable gain.
So the cost basis of each holding matters. Older positions with large gains are often the hardest to change.
We list each holding with its cost basis and unrealized gain. Then we look at which changes are worth the tax, which can wait and which may never need to happen.
Where Each Investment Belongs
Some investments may be better held in an IRA. Others may fit better in the taxable account. Our guide on what to put in taxable vs tax-advantaged accounts explains the idea.
Income from the Portfolio
We plan which account to draw from each year. The order can affect your taxes, Medicare premiums and how long the money lasts.
Through our investment management service, the taxable account and the IRAs are run as one portfolio, so the income plan and the investments stay in step.
Connecting the Portfolio to the Estate Plan
Account ownership and beneficiary designations can affect where assets go at death. We review the titles and beneficiary designations with your estate attorney so they match the plan in your documents.
Holland Capital does not draft legal documents. We coordinate the accounts with the estate plan your attorney has prepared.
How We Work with Clients in Hilton Head Island
Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.
Bring your most recent brokerage and IRA statements, a cost basis report for the taxable account, your Social Security statements, your latest federal tax return and a summary of your estate documents.
You leave with a written list of your fees, a plan for your retirement income and a short list of the next steps.
The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Is Holland Capital Paid?
We offer financial planning on a fixed-fee basis, subject to the scope of the engagement. Investment management is offered on a fee basis, generally calculated as a percentage of the assets we manage. When providing financial planning and investment advisory services, we act as a fiduciary. Holland Capital Management may also receive commissions when clients buy insurance through the firm. Those commissions create a conflict of interest, which we disclose in our Form ADV.
Will You Sell Everything and Start Over?
No. Selling everything at once could create a large tax bill. Any changes are planned with the taxes in view, and some holdings may stay as they are.
Why Work with a Fiduciary on a Taxable Portfolio?
Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. With a large taxable portfolio, that means weighing the tax cost of every change before we recommend it.
Is There a Place to Meet on the Island?
Yes. We reserve a meeting room at the Regus center on Office Park Road. Shorter conversations can happen by phone or video.
