A few big raises in a short time. More income than your old budget planned for. Nothing written down yet.

Herndon is a town of about 25,500 people, and only about 10% are 65 or older. Median household income is close to $148,000. AWS, BAE, Cisco, Leidos, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman are among the employers the town lists.

A fast rise in income can create several financial choices at once. How much to save, where to put it and what to do about a home all arrive together. A first complete plan puts them in order, using today’s pay rather than raises that may not come. A fixed fee covers the thinking, and you decide who carries it out. When you compare advisors, ask each one about fiduciary status and how their compensation works.

Start with Cash Flow

We begin with where each paycheck goes today. Then we set a cash reserve and a monthly savings amount that still leaves room for the life you want now.

Choosing Where Savings Go

We decide how much goes to your 401(k), an IRA and a taxable account. Our workplace plan guide covers the 401(k). If you hold any company stock, we include it, but the plan does not depend on it.

Which account holds which investment also affects your taxes, as our page on asset location explains.

Goals Beyond Retirement

A first plan can also cover nearer goals, such as a home, a wedding, children or more freedom to choose your work later. Each goal gets a date and a cost, so you can see what fits.

You can open the accounts and invest yourself. Our investment management comes later only if you ask for it.

How We Work with Clients in Herndon

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Start by gathering a recent pay stub, your benefits summary, every account statement and a list of any debts.

Your first written plan comes at a fixed price agreed before we start. Follow it yourself, give it to another advisor or have us help put it in place.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Our offices are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida. We work with clients in Herndon primarily by video or phone. When an in-person meeting makes sense, we meet by appointment at the Regus center at 607 Herndon Parkway.

For clients whose investments we manage, accounts are held directly at Charles Schwab in the client’s own name. Holland Capital manages the investments but does not take custody of client assets. If a client ever needs in-person assistance from Schwab, the closest branch is in Reston at 11953 Freedom Drive.

We work with clients throughout Virginia. You can see the other Virginia communities we serve here.

Our what we do page explains how a planning engagement works.

Does a First Plan Need a Fiduciary Financial Advisor?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. Early in a career, that means the plan may tell you to pay off debt or build cash before investing anything with us.

Your plan carries a fixed fee, set before any work begins. Investment management, if you want it someday, has its own separate fee, explained before you choose.
