Four benefits. One retirement date.

Garner sits about 11 minutes from downtown Raleigh and the state government offices. About one in seven Garner workers works for a government.

If you have worked for a North Carolina state agency for many years, your retirement may rest on several benefits at once. Each has its own rules. The date you choose affects all of them.

The State Pension

The Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS) pays a monthly pension based on a formula that includes your pay and years of service. When you can retire with an unreduced benefit depends on your age and your service.

At retirement, you also choose a payment option. Some options pay less each month so a named survivor can keep receiving income after your death. The choice is generally permanent. Our state employee retirement guide explains each option.

The NC 401(k) and NC 457

Many state employees also save in the NC 401(k), the NC 457 or both. These accounts can fill the gap between the pension and what you spend.

The NC 457 generally does not carry the 10% early withdrawal tax that applies to many retirement accounts before age 59½. That can make it useful if you retire early.

Retiree Health Coverage

Whether you can keep State Health Plan coverage in retirement, and what it costs, depends on when you were hired and your years of service. Medicare can also change how the coverage works.

Social Security fits in too. The age you claim it changes how much you need from the pension and your savings each year.

Some state retirees later return to work part-time. Going back to work for a TSERS employer after retiring can affect your pension and health coverage, so check the rules first.

Health coverage can matter as much as the pension when you choose a date. We check the rules that apply to you before you set it.

At Holland Capital, investment management for state retirees is built around the pension, not in place of it.

How We Work with Clients in Garner

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Bring your latest TSERS benefit estimate, your NC 401(k) and NC 457 statements, your State Health Plan details, your Social Security estimate and your last tax return.

You get a written plan: the retirement dates that work, the pension option to consider, when to draw from each account and how health coverage fits.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

When Can I Retire from North Carolina State Service?

It depends on your age, your service and when you were hired. Your TSERS estimate shows when your benefit is unreduced. We look at that date alongside your savings and health coverage.

What Does a Fiduciary Financial Advisor Add to State Retirement Benefits?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. For a state employee, that means advice on the pension, the savings plans and health coverage together.

Our fee is set out in writing before we begin.
