As a fiduciary financial advisor in Fort Mill, Holland Capital helps households that live in South Carolina and earn their pay in Charlotte coordinate two state tax returns, two sets of workplace benefits and one long-term plan. We work with clients in Fort Mill by video and phone, and meet in person by appointment at our office in Ballantyne, about 15 minutes away.
Live in South Carolina. Work in North Carolina. Plan for both.
Fort Mill has about 31,000 people, and nearly three in ten of its workers have jobs outside South Carolina.
If one or both of you work in Charlotte, your pay stub may show North Carolina tax withheld. Getting both state returns right is only part of it. The larger question is whether your savings, benefits and investments work as one plan, and whether the person advising you is required to put your interest first.
Two State Returns, One Household
As a South Carolina resident, you report all of your income to South Carolina, wherever you earn it. If you work in North Carolina, you may also file a North Carolina nonresident return for those wages.
South Carolina allows a credit for income tax paid to another state on the same wages. The credit has limits, so the two returns need to be planned together.
If the tax taken from your pay does not match what the two returns require, you can owe at filing time. We review both returns when we update the plan.
Two Sets of Benefits
When both spouses work, you may have two 401(k) plans and two health plans. Each has its own match, fund menu and rules.
We help decide where the next dollar of savings goes. We also look at which plan holds which investments and whether a Roth option fits your tax situation. Our guide on asset location explains why the same fund can belong in one account and not another.
One Advisor for the Whole Picture
When you compare advisors, ask two questions. Does the advisor owe you a fiduciary duty on every recommendation? And how is that advisor paid?
At Holland Capital, the advice covers your workplace plans, your taxes and your savings, including accounts we do not hold. Our investment management service is one part of that work, with its own fee that we explain in writing.
How We Work with Clients in Fort Mill
Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.
Bring last year’s South Carolina and North Carolina returns, a recent pay stub for each job, the benefits summary from each employer and a statement for every investment account.
We give you a written plan covering withholding, where each dollar of savings goes and how your investments are set up across all of your accounts.
The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I Pay Tax to Both Carolinas If I Work in Charlotte?
You may file in both states. North Carolina generally taxes wages for work done there, and South Carolina gives its residents a limited credit for that tax. What you owe depends on both returns together.
