As a fiduciary financial advisor in Falls Church, Holland Capital helps couples in their 50s who expect to leave Northern Virginia at retirement test what a lower-cost area or a state without an income tax would change. Falls Church planning runs mostly on video and phone; to sit down together, we reserve a room at the Regus center on Arlington Boulevard, by appointment.
Retirement is a few years off. Leaving is on the table. The numbers are not run yet.
About 15,200 people live in Falls Church, and about 15% are 65 or older. Homes here carry a median value of about $1.06 million, and about 53% are owner-occupied.
A move can shift home prices, property taxes, income tax and trips back to family. A fixed-fee written plan compares staying with each place you have in mind. You pay for the analysis; no account has to move. Before leaning on anyone’s answer, ask if they owe you a fiduciary duty and what their pay depends on.
Start with a Plan for Staying
We first plan retirement as if you stayed. Virginia generally taxes pension and retirement-account income to the extent it is included in federal adjusted gross income, unless a specific Virginia subtraction applies. Social Security is subtracted. Our retirement planning then measures each destination against that baseline.
Pricing Out Each Destination
For each place, we swap in the costs that would change: the next home, its taxes and insurance, and that state’s tax on your income. Lower income tax can come with higher costs elsewhere, so we show the net result.
If you sell here, a married couple filing jointly may qualify to exclude up to $500,000 of gain. The full exclusion depends on the IRS ownership, use and other eligibility rules.

When You Move Matters Too
The year you sell, stop working and start withdrawals may fall close together. Our guide to tax-efficient investing explains how that sequence can change what you owe.

Our investment management is an option after you decide, with accounts following a written investment policy statement you approve.
How We Work with Clients in Falls Church
Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.
Bring a recent tax return, a rough sale price for your home, your account statements and the places you are weighing.
You get a written comparison of staying and leaving, for a fixed fee set before we begin. Act on it yourselves, through an advisor you already have, or by asking us to help.
The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.
Our offices are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida. We work with clients in Falls Church primarily by video or phone. When an in-person meeting makes sense, we meet by appointment at the Regus center at 6402 Arlington Boulevard.
For clients whose investments we manage, accounts are held directly at Charles Schwab in the client’s own name. Holland Capital manages the investments but does not take custody of client assets. If a client ever needs in-person assistance from Schwab, the closest branch is in Tysons at 1650 Tysons Boulevard.
We work with clients throughout Virginia. You can see the other Virginia communities we serve here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Moving to a State Without an Income Tax Lower Our Costs?
Not necessarily. Housing, property taxes, insurance and travel can offset part or all of the income tax difference, so we compare the full picture.
How Does a Fiduciary Financial Advisor Help with a Retirement Move?
Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. If you are weighing a move, you may hear from us that staying in Virginia fits better, if the numbers say so.
Your plan costs a fixed fee agreed up front; if we later manage investments, that is a separate fee, and you hear about it first.
Is There a Place to Meet Near Falls Church?
Yes. The Regus center at 6402 Arlington Boulevard, Falls Church, sits just outside the city limits, and we reserve a room there by appointment. Calls and video handle most of the planning.
