One set of government benefits. One set of private-sector benefits. Two systems designed separately.

Chesapeake has about 255,000 residents. Dollar Tree has its headquarters here, and Norfolk Naval Shipyard is nearby. About 28,600 veterans live in the city.

In your household, one career may provide a pension or retired pay, survivor choices and the TSP. The other may provide a workplace retirement plan, health coverage and life insurance. Together, they can overlap in some places and leave gaps in others. A fixed-fee written plan sorts out which benefit covers what, without moving a single account. Ask any advisor whether they act as a fiduciary and how they earn their income.

Mapping Two Benefit Systems Side by Side

We list what each career provides: pension or retired pay, workplace savings, health coverage, life insurance and survivor elections. We note which benefits continue after that job ends and which stop.

For the military side, see our military retirement financial planning guide. For a federal civilian, our FERS retirement planning guide covers the pension and the TSP.

Two Retirement Dates, One Household Budget

The two careers may not end in the same year. We test the government career ending first, the private career ending first, and both together. Each version shows income, taxes and withdrawals year by year.

Finding Gaps and Overlaps

We do not assume one spouse’s benefits extend to the other. We check each benefit on its own, then see where coverage may repeat and where it may fall short. The choices stay yours.

Investments, If You Want Us Involved

If you later want help with the portfolio, investment management is a separate choice, tied to a written investment policy statement built from the plan.

How We Work with Clients in Chesapeake

Holland Capital Management is an independent registered investment adviser and a fiduciary. M. Chad Holland, CFA, CFP® works directly with clients and is responsible for the planning and advice.

Bring a benefits summary from each employer, the latest pension or retired pay estimate, TSP and 401(k) statements, any life insurance policies and survivor election paperwork.

The result is a written plan covering both careers, for a fixed fee set before we start. Follow it on your own, share it with an advisor you already have, or work through it with us.

The first conversation is free. If there is work worth doing after that, we will define the scope and cost before you decide whether to move forward.

Our offices are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida. We work with clients in Chesapeake primarily by video or phone. When an in-person meeting makes sense, we meet by appointment at the Regus center at Crossways Commerce I, 1545 Crossways Boulevard, Suite 250.

For clients whose investments we manage, accounts are held directly at Charles Schwab in the client’s own name. Holland Capital manages the investments but does not take custody of client assets. If a client ever needs in-person assistance from Schwab, the closest branch is in Virginia Beach at 4701 Virginia Beach Boulevard.

We work with clients throughout Virginia. You can see the other Virginia communities we serve here.

Our what we do page explains how a planning engagement works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do Two Different Benefit Systems Fit into One Retirement?

We put each benefit, with its start and stop dates, on one household timeline. From there you decide which elections and coverage make sense.

Why Is a Fiduciary Financial Advisor Useful When Two Careers Meet?

Holland Capital acts as a fiduciary when providing financial planning and investment advice. For a two-benefit household, that means our advice weighs both careers evenly, not only the accounts that could be managed.

Our planning fee is fixed and agreed before work begins; managing investments later would be a separate fee, and we would tell you plainly before you decided.

Do You Meet Clients in Chesapeake?

Yes, by appointment at Crossways Commerce I, 1545 Crossways Boulevard, Suite 250, Chesapeake. The day-to-day planning work happens mainly by video or phone.
