Which State Taxes Your Pay
North Carolina generally taxes its residents on income from everywhere, including pay from an employer in another state. The employer’s state may also tax part of that pay, depending on its own rules.
If North Carolina and another state both tax the same income, North Carolina may allow a credit for qualifying tax paid to the other state. The result depends on the states involved.
Checking Your Withholding
A company based in another state may withhold that state’s tax instead of North Carolina’s, or withhold for both. Check your pay stub and your W-2 to see which states are listed.
If too little North Carolina tax is withheld, you may owe when you file. Your employer may be able to update your state withholding. If not, estimated payments may be needed.
If you also work in a third state, that state may have its own filing rules. Keeping a record of where you worked can make filing easier.
